winter break

this term, "winter break", is a new thing to me. this week my eldest and all other school chilren have 1 full week off from school. they are of course thrilled. not being from new england, we had no such breaks from school in winter. we had president's day off and that was that. but looking back now we didn't require a "break". the winter was never something that required this. but now living here in maine, in knee deep snow and ice and below freezing temps for SO long, i get it! i NEED a break myself. i do not think this is the spirit the shcool breaks for. i am guessing so many ski or ice skate and enjoy all the winter outdoor activities. not me, i'd fly to FL if i could. bask on a warm beach under a palm tree, get some color on my otherwise dry cracked winter skin (it is NOT pretty let me tell ya!). where i grew up skiing was for the "rich" kids. i never ever learned how to ski and having had my ACL replaced several years back totally prohibits these activities for me. no way should i ever get on a ski or snowboard and risk blowing it out again. so i am taking this week's break as a mental break from all that lingers outside. i am going to take it and dream of spring and growth and green and flowers. ahhhhhhhhhhhh yes that is just the type of "break" i need.

how about you? do you need a "winter break"? what would you do with it?

I grew up in NY and had winter break every year when I was in school. We were always told it was so that they schools could turn down the temp on the furnace and save lots of money - that Feb was a very expensive month for schools due to heating & warming up those buses every morning in the middle of blizzards. Sounded good to me! I thought winter break was normal - but always used it to dream of Spring! Enjoy your winter break and Spring thoughts.

We get an extra long weekend - Friday off plus President's day here in Ohio. I'd love to jet to the beach, but we just hung out here!

Enjoy your break. I want a winter break. We have spring break coming up and my daughter is headed to Arizona with her friend--they have a vacation home down there. She is so excited and I am left a little bitter...I want warm weather!!!! =]

wish you could have that bask in CA, then we could hang out. oddly, spring sounds good after a few days of rain. trapped inside with sick toddlers make for a batty mama.

So you guys normally have one big holiday in Summer? Ours are broken up, into four school terms. At the end of the first three terms (each 10 weeks or so) there is a two week holiday. Then after the forth term its the big Summer/Christmas holidays, 6-8 weeks.

Gee, I go on huh?

Truly I think your photography has progressed to amazing heights this winter, you made snow beautiful! Enjoy your break babe.

What can I say. Living in Spain I really miss Maine! I´d pack up my trusty boots in a heart beat to spend time there- even winter time! Love your photos!

oh yes, a winter break from grey skies is what I've been wishing for and today it finally came! It was a balmy 6 degrees celsius. I was from the prairies so I know how those long snowy winters can weigh on you. Here's to palm trees and warm sandy beaches!

yes, a mommy break. I could use that this week, as much as I love these boys, because it comes during a BAD MOON and my mind is, how should I say, "fragile?" right now!!

I did not even know you had a blog...doh :)

Living in SC, having a winter break, would actually go where there is winter, ehehe :)

Enjoy the break, that means that Spring is that much closer!

As a teacher on winter break...yes...we need it.
Without it , it's way too long to April break...winter just hangs around here. I did, however, get away to a warmer climate, even just for a few days. Hang in there.

As unschoolers, winter break just means a week of *not* going anywhere because it's too crowded. ; >
