field trip fun

yesterday kellen's kindergarten class took a field trip (their first official field trip) to Harris Farm, a working dairy and vegetable farm.  All 3 kindergarten classes, their teachers, many moms & dads and a few younger siblings,  we were quite a crowd.  I was impressed with how quiet the kids sat and listened to the owners of the farm speak of farm life in Maine.  what grows well here what doesn't.  how a cow has to be a female to give milk and a mommy at that.  they were really listening and watching the slide show in the main building.  then we were split in 2 groups and taken on a hands on tour.  The kids got to feed the goats and hold baby chicks and kittens.  kellen even asked to hold the chicken.  i was a little surprised by this, he is usually very timid of all animals,  never really wanting to approach or be approached by animals.  i respect that part of him, i know it is a fear of his.  but seeing he asked, i quickly scooped up a chicken and placed it in his hands and he did so great.  he didn't panic, he happily held it for a few minutes.  casey wanted to hold the kitten.  i was waiting for her to ask to take it home!  :)   then we took a hay ride through the fields, saw a horse, and then ended back at the cow barn to get a chance to milk Kayla the cow.  Kayla was very patient. kellen and casey both milked the cow and both commented on how soft it was.  i thought that was a cute,  i guess i never really thought how it would feel...  then we headed to the picnic area where we tasted the milks made and sold on the farm.  they poured chocolate and banana milks for everyone.  it was really sunny and warm,  a perfect day for visiting the farm.  i was so blessed to be able to come along,  watch him in his element with his friends at school,  and be there when he tried new things.  he always makes me proud.  a little boy in his class somehow got some "cow patty"  on his shirt,  kellen had 2 shirts on ( a tee and a button down)  so he offered his button down to his friend so he could take off his soiled shirt.  he's a good kid.  he looked awful cute too,  he wore the cowboy boots he just got for his birthday.

"thanks for sharing your day with casey and mommy kellen.  we love you!"
