favorite puppies...

i owe you all an update on "favorite puppy"
and if you have no idea what i am talking about you can read here first...

so puppy was lost on monday. i hoped with all hope that someone would call...
in the meanwhile my husband found the same stuffed dog on ebay.
see favorite puppy was a 2007 holiday puppy and is no longer made so replacing it took a little internet hunting. he ordered it to replace favorite puppy if it came down to that. it was in the mail and on its way. but still i hoped...

on tuesday night i called target at closing time hoping that maybe puppy was there and someone forgot to call me. no luck.
each night casey was sad, but not necessarily in the way i assumed. she was not sad for herself, she would say, "mummah i am scared for puppy. puppy is all alone. if someone finds puppy they will not love puppy like i love puppy." over and over she would say this.. it touched me that she was really scared for her puppy. this made me hope even more that somehow it would return...
wed, no.
thurs, no. but on thursday the new puppy arrived in the mail. now hubby and i had a decision to make. here 4 whole days had passed . to us favorite puppy was a goner. i assumed if someone cleaning target found puppy they may have tossed her thinking she was "just trash". puppy was not shiny and new, she was well loved and worn hard by that love (and occasional forced baths in my washing machine..) puppy was a bit dingy, had a few holes and had lost most her stuffing. so i could see how someone might throw it away... especially if they had no kids of their own. or i figured maybe another child found puppy and just took her home. either way favorite puppy was gone. each passing day casey got more upset by this. instead of her anxiety lessening, it only increased. on thursday she had herself so upset we decided that when she finally fell asleep we would place the new puppy in her bed with her, and then take her lead when she woke in the morning. so we did. and she woke elated. she told us that the doll fairy found puppy and fixed her and made her all new and fat again... to her this was her beloved favorite puppy. we were pleased.
this is all occurring on friday morning at 7am... then around 10:00 am my phone rings. i pick up the handset and look at the caller ID... it reads "TARGET"!!!!!!!!!!! no way. no no no no no!!!! i quickly pick it up and rush into my bedroom and close the door behind me. yes indeed they FOUND puppy. they found puppy after 5 days missing, on the very morning we replaced puppy with the new one, that casey did not know was a new one... really?!?!? yeah really. i was now even sadder. i would have MUCH rather given her back the worn loved puppy. that was what i always wanted, but after 5 days i just figured there was no light at the end of that tunnel anymore...

so there ya have it. my crazy life. or murphy's law... i don't know. what did i do? i went to target in secret and picked old favorite puppy up for safe keeping. i have her stowed away in a safe place just in case i need her one day... and if we don't she will be saved and given to casey when she is older with her other childhood keepsakes and i will tell her this story... one day... when she is 18. maybe. :)

I totally understand this! The things we do for our kids. We had a similar incident when our son was 4. We had been on vacation to St. John and our son, Connor fell in love with this blue iguana stuffed animal in a gift shop. So we bought it and he named it Iggy and carried it with him everywhere. A few months pass and we are at work, Connor at pre-school and my husband comes home to find one of the dogs found Iggy and chewed him to pieces! We were so upset and had to pretend that Iggy was "hiding" until we could figure out what to do. I called the resort in St. John and found out they had another blue stuffed iguana and had them overnight it to me...ended up costing us $80 for a stupid $10 stuffed animal! But Connor never knew that Iggy had become dog chow!

Oh, it is so sweet that she was so concerned for puppy's well-being. And I love that she came up with the fairy story! It's perfect. And it is nice, too, that the old one was found. :)
